I love events of all kinds: Ballets, Concerts, Circuses, Plays. Sometimes the activities before and after a performance are as interesting as the show itself. The disgarded props tell their own story. For my latest series, the pointe shoes were purchased after remembering a practice room I visited in a Upper Westside dance studio in New York years ago. Most of the shoes strewn around, were torn and tattered from what seemed like a lot of use.
My personal favorite of these paintings is entitled "The Show is Over and He is Gone". It was done from a photo which I saved for years. The photo was taken after an leisurely trip to the Tempe Art Musuem with friends, one of which was a longtime friend, Fritz Scholder who passed away in 2005.
After I finished the paintings of the pointe shoes, there was an article in the Tucson Daily Star by Gerald M. Gay telling how many slippers ballerinas go through in a season. A dancer may even go through a pair of slippers in a lengthy rehearsal.
My commissioned pet portraits are on a separate website: www.FurryFriendsFineArts.com.
